The St. Mawes One Design is a The St. Mawes OD was designed by local boat builder Frankie Peters as a boat to race in himself. He built the prototype "Aileen" in 1923, and over the following four decades he built 23 further boats himself, and 8 others were also built, bringing the total to 32. Sixteen years ago, under the guidance of Frankie Peters, Jonathan Leach built OD 32, the first one design to be built for more than a decade.

Since 1988, twelve more boats have been added to the fleet, all of them built by J.P. Leach. Most of these remain in the estuary, and these numbers include several championship winners. Jonathan is rightly proud to stake a claim to a large part of the responsibility for the revival and continued huge enthusiasm shown for this class locally.
In 1990 "Aileen", OD no. 1, which had been lost for some years, was found and donated to the class association. J.P. Leach were responsible for the painstaking restoration of this unique boat. She was relaunched and sailed for several seasons, before being presented to the National Maritime Museum, Cornwall (NMMC) in Falmouth in August 2003. |
